About

Ahmed Shalaby Bardan has been working as a Consultant Ophthalmologist in the UK for approximately five years. He was appointed as a Consultant Ophthalmologist at St James’s University Hospital, Leeds, and as an Honorary Lecturer in Ophthalmology at Leeds University in May 2021.

Mr Bardan is an expert in managing complex and challenging cataract cases, including the use of premium and multifocal intraocular lenses. He is also a highly experienced laser and lens refractive surgeon. He is certified by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists as a refractive surgeon, having obtained the Certificate in Laser Refractive Surgery (CertLRS) in October 2021.

In addition to his clinical work, Mr Bardan serves as an examiner for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, participating in both the FRCOphth and CertLRS examinations.

Mr Bardan specialises in corneal transplant surgery, including advanced endothelial corneal transplants (DMEK) and lamellar corneal transplants (DALK). He has contributed extensively to the field of ophthalmology, publishing more than 25 articles in international peer-reviewed journals, including three book chapters and one textbook on cataract surgery.

He has participated in national and international courses and workshops on cataract surgery, laser refractive surgery, immediate sequential bilateral cataract surgery, and anterior lamellar and endothelial keratoplasty techniques.

Following his basic and higher specialty training in Egypt at the Ophthalmology residency programme of Alexandria University Hospitals, Mr Bardan joined the team at Sussex Eye Hospital, Brighton, UK, for a two-and-a-half-year fellowship in Cornea and Anterior Segment diseases. During this time, he worked under combined supervision for his PhD thesis between Alexandria University and Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals.
