Professional Summary
Mr Ayad Shafiq is a consultant eye surgeon based in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, where he has worked since 2001. He is recognised as one of the most experienced cataract surgeons in the region, having consistently performed more cataract surgeries per session than any other surgeon in Newcastle, all while maintaining the lowest complication rate among high-volume surgeons. Mr Shafiq's vast experience ensures that his surgeries are both comfortable and safe for his patients.
He is also the most experienced children's cataract surgeon in the region, with expertise in performing cataract surgery on babies born with cataracts. Additionally, he is highly skilled in using trifocal implants in cataract surgery, catering to both distance and near-sightedness, and toric lens implants to correct astigmatism.
Mr Shafiq serves as a specialist adviser to the Care Quality Commission and offers expert opinions to the General Medical Council on issues concerning standards of care.
Outside of work, Mr Shafiq has represented the North of England in Hockey and has gained five Hockey Blues for Oxford and Cambridge Universities. He also played in the National League Division 1 for Hockey
