Mr. Malcolm Woodcock is a highly experienced Consultant Ophthalmologist and Vitreoretinal Surgeon, serving at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust. He established and currently manages the vitreoretinal (VR) service in Worcestershire and collaborates closely with the regional VR service at the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre (BMEC) at City Hospital in Birmingham. Within Worcestershire, Mr. Woodcock is the designated specialist for complex cataract cases requiring further intervention, and he also performs a high volume of routine cataract surgeries.
Mr. Woodcock's expertise extends to a wide range of retinal surgeries, including macular hole repairs, epiretinal membrane peeling, and retinal detachment repairs. Beyond his work in vitreoretinal surgery, he holds a unique specialisation in aviation medicine. Between 2007 and 2014, he served as the Head of Aviation Ophthalmology for the UK's three armed services—Fleet Air Arm, Army Air Corps, and the RAF.
A sought-after speaker, Mr. Woodcock frequently lectures on topics related to ophthalmology and vitreoretinal surgery to professional groups such as optometrists, GPs, and military medical officers. He is also a regular lecturer on aviation ophthalmology at the Royal Air Force's Centre for Aviation Medicine and King’s College London, particularly contributing to the internationally recognised Diploma of Aviation Medicine course. His academic engagements include teaching and lecturing to medical students at esteemed institutions such as the universities of Cambridge, Birmingham, Cape Town, and University College London (UCL).
Mr. Woodcock is actively engaged in research, maintaining collaborations with Moorfields Eye Hospital in London and the Centre of Aviation Medicine at RAF Boscombe Down. He has authored numerous publications in scientific journals and presented his research at both national and international conferences. Additionally, he serves as a reviewer for four international ophthalmology journals.
His research interests encompass cataract and refractive surgery, ocular trauma, aviation ophthalmology, as well as advanced intraocular lens technology, including premium, toric anti-astigmatic, and multifocal lenses, and clear lens extraction refractive surgery.
