About

Raj Hanspal is an experienced cataract surgeon with outcomes exceeding national guidelines and requirements. He also has a subspeciality interest in glaucoma.

Originally from Kenya, Raj came to the UK in 1994 to complete his school education before attending the University of Edinburgh for his medical training. He gained experience through roles in Accident and Emergency (Leicester) and Neurology (Leeds) before beginning his ophthalmology training in Devon at Torbay and Exeter Hospitals. He completed his registrar ophthalmic training with posts at Addenbrooke’s Hospital (Cambridge) and the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital.

Raj served as the clinical lead of the West Suffolk Hospital eye department for eight years and completed the NHS Mary Seacole programme with merit, earning a postgraduate certificate in Healthcare Leadership.

Together with his partners, Raj co-founded Newmedica Suffolk to enhance the use of the independent sector, aiming to improve patient care and experience in collaboration with the local NHS.

Passionate about teaching, Raj earned a Master of Arts (MA) in Medical Education with commendation and provides training to a range of stakeholders to facilitate shared care.

Raj and his family enjoy living in Suffolk, where he proudly serves as a trustee of Suffolk Sight, a remarkable local charity supporting individuals living with sight loss in the area.
