About

Dr Ricardo de Sousa Peixoto is a highly regarded Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon based at the Royal Derby Hospital, specialised in managing a wide range of eye conditions. He has qualifications from the University of Warwick and a PhD in genetics from the University of Edinburgh. He has combined his strong academic foundation with advanced clinical training, as he went on to complete fellowships in glaucoma at Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham, and the Birmingham Midlands Eye Centre. He specialises in glaucoma care, particularly complex cases requiring innovative surgical interventions like glaucoma drainage devices and minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries (MIGS).

Dr Peixoto is a pioneer in his field, establishing the MIGS service at Derby and being certified to implant advanced devices such as the OMNI®, iStent® and Preserflo™. He is recognised as a key opinion leader in the OMNI® system, as he shares his expertise with glaucoma surgeons nationwide. His practice also includes cataract surgery with premium lenses, alongside treatment for conditions like dry eye and blepharitis.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr Peixoto is actively involved in impactful research and holds leadership roles within the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. Fluent in English, Portuguese and Spanish, and he provides patient-centred care of the highest standard and is dedicated to the advancement of ophthalmology.
