A Whiteley and Shedfield councillor is urging people with cataracts to not be afraid of having them removed because it “makes a huge difference to your life”.
Vivian Achwal, who has served on Winchester City Council for 16 years, recently had cataract surgery at Newmedica Hampshire’s clinic after her vision became increasingly blurry.
Blurred vision is a common symptom of cataracts, a condition that can lead to blindness if not treated.
As with all conditions, early detection is important – and Cllr Achwal urged people not to let their fear of the surgery put them off having it.
She said: “When I went to see the optician last year there was no indication that I had a cataract. Then this year my vision was a bit blurry, so I went to get it checked – and I had a cataract. As quick as that.
“I was quite nervous about having it removed, but in reality it was fine. The surgeon was brilliant. He calmed me a lot and another member of staff held my hand, which is a policy of theirs and made a big difference.
“The surgery was very quick, about 10 minutes, and I didn’t feel a thing. The staff were amazing – really professional and reassuring.
“My sight is so much clearer now and I’m back driving, which is important because I need that independence.
“I would certainly urge others to have the surgery if they need it. There really is nothing to be nervous about and it makes a huge difference to your life.”
Newmedica Hampshire operates from the St Andrew's House in Whiteley, providing services for NHS and private patients. It is also assisting the NHS with reducing its waiting lists.
The clinic is owned and run by consultant ophthalmologists Mr Serafeim Antonakis, Mr Bhaskar Gupta, Ms Varajini Joganathan and Mr Aby Jacobs, alongside operational director Chris Berry.
Bhaskar Gupta said: “Cllr Achwal’s story is such a good example of why people have no need to worry about cataract surgery or delay their treatment.
“The surgery is quick, painless and life-changing, enabling people to maintain their independence for years to come.”
In the future, Newmedica Hampshire will offer its expertise and hospital-grade facilities to help train new NHS surgeons, ensuring the continuation of high-quality care for people across the county.
The clinic offers a range of eyecare treatments, including oculoplastics, YAG Laser, and for glaucoma, and intends to expand the team as the demand for services grows.
