Working with the NHS

Newmedica is unique among ophthalmology providers. We were founded by a former eyecare patient and a leading ophthalmology consultant. Our aim is to transform the patient experience and deliver the best care possible.

About us

Ever since we started our journey, we've been focused on providing patients with personalised care that meets their needs, and to work in partnership with the NHS and community optometrists. With the support of integrated care boards, we've been able to set up services that care for more than 105,000 patients per year in locations across England.

Best in class service

At Newmedica, patients are at the heart of everything we do. Sight problems can be life-altering, so in offering a service that could improve people’s health and support them to see more effectively, we fully understand the impact we can have on the patient’s overall health, such as reducing their risk of trips and falls.

What our partners have said

BNSSG Integrated Care Board

BNSSG Integrated Care Board (ICB) has worked in close collaboration with Newmedica for a number of years as they are commissioned to deliver cataract, YAG laser and oculoplastics work within our locality.

Newmedica were kind enough to invite our team to see their new facility at Aztec West in the summer of 2022. The service was impressively designed, and you could see the attention to detail that had gone into the building’s layout, supporting best practice around infection prevention and control. The service offers lots of space for patients when they are waiting and for consultants when they are treating patients.

We are always impressed by the quality and volume of work that Newmedica deliver, with robust processes in place to ensure that a high standard of service delivery is offered to every patient. The reporting we received from Newmedica colleagues is always extremely detailed, patient-focused and gives us excellent assurance that the provider is delivering a safe and effective service." Dominic Griffin Contract Manager, NHS Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire ICB

Leicestershire and Rutland

Dr Jo McKenna said, “Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland patients benefited from a swift restart of elective cataract services following the initial COVID suspensions. Effective and constructive collaboration between Newmedica and other system providers enabled us to identify backlogs of patients whose treatment was delayed due to COVID, and to match them to the next available surgical capacity across any of the system providers to deliver swift access to surgical pathways in a COVID-secure way.

Communication with patients was critical to facilitating transfers across the providers, and the Newmedica team worked effectively, not only in reassuring patients about the infection prevention safeguards in place, but also with the booking teams and the other providers on the logistics of patient transfers, to optimise the use of capacity and to ensure our local patients received the best possible care.”

5 reasons why we’re the right choice for patients

  1. Our services are owned and led by the consultant doctors  – for them it’s personal. The whole team are dedicated to understanding patient needs, so they can provide them with the best possible experience and we know this also results in measurably better outcomes

  2. Our personalised patient care makes patients feel comfortable and at ease. We’ll give them a warm welcome, hold their hand if they’re nervous and be there for them throughout their time with us

  3. Our short waiting times mean patients have their first appointment within a couple of weeks, and we aim to complete treatment within eight weeks of the referral

  4. We choose to use the highest quality lenses to get the best clinical outcomes, including some that can reduce patients dependence on glasses. Importantly, we’ll always give them a choice and explain the options.

  5. Our state-of-the-art facilities, with the latest equipment, and free parking ensure patients can focus when they come to visit us.

It's no wonder 99% of patients would recommend us.

Expertise

Our clinical expertise and specialist staff are second to-none. That’s because we've some of the UK’s leading consultant ophthalmologists who specialise in the treatment of advanced eye conditions. Our experts have years of experience and have extensive knowledge across a breadth of services – Meet our consultants

Supporting the future workforce

We recognise that in order to have a sustainable business, Newmedica must invest in a range of comprehensive training programs, some of which we've created inhouse and others that are nationally recognised. Currently we support:

Nursing training: We've introduced a robust and successful scheme to train in house, theatre scrub technicians.

Optometrist training: We've opened our doors (both in clinic and theatre) to pre reg optometrists to allow them to experience hospital eye services with over 100 participants during 22/23.

Doctors in training: All our OJVs that've been open for more than 18 months are registered with English deaneries and are taking doctors in-training on 6-month placements to allow them to experience high volume cataract lists and perform surgery with a consultant supervisor. Newmedica Leeds, for examples, had its first trainee start in September 2021 and are now on their 5th placement. We've appointed Professor Bernie Chang, outgoing President of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, as our inhouse training expert. Professor Chang's role will ensure consistency of training offer across all services, will support new sites through the accreditation process with their local deanery and ensure a mechanism for feedback from trainees on their training experience to continually improve our training offer.

Environment

At Newmedica we're also fully committed to supporting the NHS with its Green Agenda and environmental targets; our aim being to achieve Net Zero by 2035 for the emissions that we control directly and to achieve Net Zero by 2045 for those emissions that we can influence. We are also committed to reducing our emissions by at least 90% and only relying on offsetting as a last resort. To read more about our environmental strategy, see our carbon reduction plan
